Today Maize Research Institute - Knezha welcomed students from Primary School ''Otets Paisii'' and their teachers Ms Tsvetelina Ostrovska and Ms Valya Deninska.

The young guests showed great interest in natural sciences and research activities.

The Director of the Institute Assoc. Prof. Dr Nataliya Petrovska presented the history of the institution and the main directions of its research activities to the fifth-grade students. The assistant Biserka Hinkina and the laboratory assistant Rositsa Charapanska introduced the children to the world of science through a series of demonstrations and observations.

In the laboratory part, the students had the opportunity to observe agents of a longitudinal section of a maize plant leaf under a miscroscope and the structure and functions of the main tissues were explained to them. They also learned about the methods of conducting meteorological observations, including measuring temperature and relative air humidity using specialised equipment.

The visit ended with tasting popcorn produced at the Institute - an example of the practical application of maize breeding and processing in the food industry
